Zambia sets up relief camps, as country faces widespread flood risks in 69 districts

At least 69 districts across Zambia are at risk of flooding, with over 659 households already affected during the 2024/2025 rainy season.

A total of 159 households have been displaced and are currently residing in camps as a result of the floods.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Chief Government Spokesperson, Cornelius Mweetwa, said the government was providing humanitarian support in the affected districts, including Lusaka, Gwembe, Chibombo, Kabwe, Chitambo, Luano, Mkushi, Chongwe, Chilanga, Itezhi-tezhi, Namwala, Mazabuka, Zambezi, and Kitwe.

Mweetwa emphasised that the country was experiencing normal to above-normal rainfall, which has contributed to localised flooding in these areas.

To support displaced families, the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit, along with other stakeholders, has established camps at the Chitukuko Skills Training Centre in George Compound and the Chaisa Skills Training Centre in Mandevu Constituency.

Kitwe was among the most affected, with a breach at the SINO Mining dam causing water contamination in the Kafue River and surrounding areas.

The acidic water from the dam has impacted the local ecosystem and compromised drinking water quality.

To mitigate the flood effects, the government has developed a National Multi-Hazard Contingency Plan.

Mweetwa said immediate interventions include providing rental relief, establishing disaster relief camps, and distributing essential supplies.

Long-term plans include addressing the structural causes of flooding, with projects like the Urban Renewal Project and the Lusaka Storm Water Management Master Plan, which focuses on improving drainage systems.

Mweetwa also assured the public that the government was closely monitoring the flood situation through the National Emergency Operations Centre to ensure safety and continue delivering crucial services.
