The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) has called on broadcasters to increase programming that amplifies children’s voices and promotes their rights.
The call comes as Zambia joined the world in commemorating International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) on March 2, 2025, under the theme “Our Children, Our Future.”
IBA Acting Director General, Susen Ndumingu, said the theme aligned with IBA’s mandate to ensure responsible broadcasting that serves the best interests of all, particularly children and youth.
“Furthermore, the theme is a powerful reminder that broadcasting stations play a significant role in shaping the next generation. The content aired today influences the thoughts, aspirations, and values of children, who are the future of our nation,” Ndumingu said.
To mark this year’s ICDB, she urged all broadcasting stations to dedicate airtime to child-friendly programsmes that actively engage children in the programming process.
“Stations must also ensure compliance with laws protecting the rights and integrity of minors while upholding ethical and professional standards in children’s content production,” she added.
Ndumingu stated that child-centered programming should extend beyond ICDB and be consistently reflected in broadcasters’ overall content strategies.
The IBA commended stations that have already embraced child-friendly content and encouraged others to follow suit.
She reaffirmed the Authority’s commitment to working with broadcasters to ensure programming that protects children from harmful content while fostering an environment that supports their growth and development.
