The government has reportedly disbursed K159,484,800 to 66,452 vulnerable households in Northern Province under the Drought Emergency Social Cash Transfer programme, aimed at cushioning poverty levels in drought-affected communities.

Provincial Principal and Public Relations Officer, Sandra Mulenga, confirmed the disbursement in a statement issued on Sunday, highlighting the government’s commitment to social protection.

“The programme, running from July 2024 to July 2025, targets vulnerable households across all 12 districts in Northern Province,” Mulenga stated.

She noted that in addition to drought effects, some areas in the province experienced flooding due to heavy rains.

Beyond the emergency assistance, the government continues to support 144,572 households under the regular Social Cash Transfer programme, including 10,814 households with persons living with disabilities.

Mulenga emphasized that the program had maintained consistent payments, enabling beneficiaries to plan and invest in their livelihoods.

She also highlighted the expansion of the Keeping Girls in School initiative, which provides K600 to each beneficiary.

“As of 2024, 8,780 girls were supported, and the program has since expanded to benefit 12,000 girls,” Mulenga said.
