Water Development and Sanitation Minister, Collins Nzovu, says President Hakainde Hichilema has deployed two helicopters to assess the extent of pollution in the Kafue River following an acid spill.
On February 18, 2025, acid effluent leaked into the Mwambashi and Kafue Rivers from Sino Metals’ tailing dams, leading to the mass death of fish and other aquatic species.
The contamination had raised concerns over public health risks for communities that depend on the rivers.
Speaking after conducting an aerial survey in Chambishi on Friday, Nzovu said President Hichilema had also deployed security operatives on the Copperbelt to evaluate the situation.
“The President has provided two helicopters for technocrats to assess the damage and facilitate immediate dosing of the acid to mitigate the impact,” Nzovu said.
He added that President Hichilema was deeply concerned about the pollution and stressed the urgency of ensuring the rivers were cleared of contaminants to protect public health.
