ZAMSTATS denies exclusion of census data on ethnicity, language from 2022 population summary report

The Zambia Statistics Agency (ZAMSTATS) has denied reports that it was instructed to exclude census data on language and ethnicity from the 2022 Population Summary Report.

The agency stated that it had not received any such directive and had not altered any data on tribal or ethnic grounds.

ZAMSTATS Board Chairperson, Oliver Chinganya, dismissed the claims, describing them as “false, unfounded, and possibly an attempt to discredit the competence and integrity of the national statistical system.”

In a statement issued on Thursday, Chinganya reaffirmed that ZAMSTATS remained committed to upholding international standards in its statistical reporting.

He assured that the revised 2022 Census and Population Summary Report was produced in line with these principles.

“As fellow citizens and stakeholders across the globe may be aware, ZAMSTATS is a corporate body established under the Statistical Act No. 13 of 2018. Our operations are governed by the Board of Directors, which reports to the Minister of Finance and National Planning,” he explained.

He further clarified that the report in question was part of a broader set of census outputs, including detailed analytical reports covering demographic aspects such as language, ethnicity, marital status, and vital statistics.

Chinganya emphasized that the credibility of census data is paramount, and that ZAMSTATS remained committed to transparency and its role as a trusted provider of official statistics in Zambia.
