Zambia and France have signed a declaration of intent to enhance bilateral cooperation in key sectors, including health, agriculture, energy, sports, youth, and culture.

The signing ceremony, held at Charter House in Lusaka on Wednesday, reaffirmed the two nations’ commitment to democracy, the rule of law, and regional cooperation.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister, who is also Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, signed on behalf of Zambia, while Thani Mohamed Soilih, Minister Delegate for Francophonie and International Partnerships under France’s Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, represented the French government.

In the health sector, the agreement aimed to boost research on infectious diseases and enhance local pharmaceutical production.

According to Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ministry Principal Public Relations Officer, Eva Hatontola Chanda, both countries would collaborate to develop local medicine and healthcare product manufacturing to strengthen Zambia’s health sovereignty.

“In agriculture, the focus will be on sustainable projects to drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and improve food security,” Chanda said.

Given Zambia’s recurring droughts, France reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts to combat food insecurity.

“In the energy sector, the partnership will prioritize expanding renewable energy investments and diversifying Zambia’s energy mix to enhance resilience and sustainability,” she added.

The agreement also covered sports cooperation to strengthen cultural ties and professional sports networks, while in youth and culture, both nations would foster cultural exchanges and support the creative industries.
