Lunte Patriotic Front (PF) lawmaker, Mutotwe Kafwaya, has accused the government of planning a law to prevent discussions about tribalism in Zambia.
Kafwaya claimed the UPND-led government was tolerating corruption and that such a law would be designed to silence critics condemning these actions.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday at Parliament Buildings, Kafwaya alleged that the UPND was actively drafting a law to curb tribalism discussions, which he said was being practiced widely under the administration.
He warned that such a move would provoke a strong backlash from the Zambian people.
“We know that the UPND is working on a law to stop people from talking about tribalism because they are heavily involved in it. They should moderate their tribal practices,” Kafwaya said.

He also challenged Vice President Mutale Nalumango to release the names of civil servants allegedly deployed at Cabinet Office due to their regional origins.
Kafwaya urged Nalumango to also disclose who had replaced them in various ministries, so that the public could form their own judgment and put an end to speculation.
“The UPND must curb their tribalism and regionalism. As the Bishops have warned, the Zambian people will respond negatively,” Kafwaya added.
He advised that tribalism should not be promoted by any group, especially those in government, and called for it to be suppressed.
Kafwaya’s statements were echoed by Mporokoso lawmaker, Brian Mundubile, who also called for an end to tribalism within Zambia’s civil service and other institutions.
