The Zambian government has clarified that it had not banned or restricted fertiliser imports, despite the country achieving self-sufficiency in production for the 2025/2026 farming season.
Ministry of Agriculture Principal and Public Relations Officer, Balewa Zyuulu, said on Tuesday that while reliance on imports was expected to decline, private entities remained free to import fertiliser as long as it met national quality standards.
“The government has not imposed any ban or restriction on fertiliser imports. Any company or individual is free to import fertiliser under existing regulations,” Zyuulu stated.
He stated government’s commitment to ensuring stable and affordable fertiliser access, in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s vision for agricultural growth and food security.

Zyuulu also referenced Minister of Agriculture Reuben Mtolo’s ministerial statement to Parliament on February 13, 2025, where he clarified that Zambia had achieved self-sufficiency in fertiliser production, particularly for D-Compound, due to increased local manufacturing capacity.
He attributed this success to new investments in the sector, including United Capital Fertiliser, which has boosted domestic production.
