The British government has commended Zambia’s ongoing agricultural reforms, particularly the success of the E-voucher system, describing them as key to positioning Zambia as a regional leader in food production.

British High Commissioner to Zambia, Rebecca Terzeon, made the remarks on Monday during a courtesy call on Agriculture Minister, Reuben Mtolo.

She praised Zambia’s commitment to enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability, emphasizing that the reforms would contribute to food security and economic growth.

“The reforms being undertaken are crucial in transforming Zambia into a leading food producer in the region,” Terzeon said.

She reaffirmed UK’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s agricultural sector, particularly in areas of innovation and climate resilience.

She also pledged UK’s continued partnership in Zambia’s fight against climate change, recognizing the link between sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

Minister Mtolo welcomed the British government’s support, stressing the need for policy consistency in driving growth.

He highlighted Zambia’s ambitious agricultural production targets set by President Hakainde Hichilema, which included achieving annual outputs of 10 million metric tonnes of maize, 1 million metric tonnes of soya beans, and 1 million metric tonnes of wheat by 2027.

He further noted that the government was prioritizing agricultural production through the Presidential Irrigation Initiative, a key pillar in the administration’s broader strategy to enhance food security and economic development.

The meeting reinforced strong bilateral cooperation between Zambia and the UK, with both governments committed to advancing sustainable agricultural growth, food security, and climate resilience.
