Zambia’s Copper Queens asserted their dominance with a 2-0 victory over Malawi’s Scorchers in the first of two FIFA international friendlies at REIZ Arena (formerly Woodlands Stadium) in Lusaka yesterday.
The match resumed from the 21st minute after being abandoned on Saturday due to heavy rains. At the time of interruption, Zambia was leading 1-0 courtesy of Aveil Chitundu’s goal.
Despite Malawi’s resilience, the Copper Queens controlled the game. In the 28th minute, Zambia earned a penalty following a foul in the box, but Racheal Nachila’s effort was saved by Malawi goalkeeper Mercy Sikelo.
Both teams created opportunities, but Zambia sealed the win in the 79th minute when Racheal Kundananji found the net.
With the victory, Zambia leads the two-match friendly series. The second fixture is set for tomorrow afternoon at the same venue.
The Copper Queens are using these matches to prepare for the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, while Malawi is gearing up for the 2026 WAFCON qualifiers.
