The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has reaffirmed its commitment to increasing Zambia’s national live cattle population to seven million by 2027, in line with the Presidential vision.
This target is from the current 5.1 million cattle population currently in the country.
Fisheries and Livestock Minister, Peter Kapala, emphasised that achieving the seven million target required strategic initiatives, including a partnership with the Zambia National Service (ZNS).
The Minister was speaking during a meeting with ZNS Commander, Maliti Solochi, held at the Ministry Headquarters in Lusaka on Saturday.

“With strong public confidence, my ministry is entrusting ZNS with managing six key breeding centers, namely Mbesuma (Muchinga), Chipompo (Northern), Kalungwishi (Northern), Mutaba (Copperbelt), Jiwundu (Northwestern), and Kanchindu (Southern), to support Presidential aspirations of job creation and expansion of Zambia’s cattle population to 7 million by 2027.
“We remain committed to partnering with ZNS to deliver for the people and transform these centers into models of sustainable livestock development.”
He stated that this partnership with ZNS was expected to be a game-changer in accelerating livestock development, ensuring national food security, increasing beef exports, and enhancing Zambia’s economy.
In response, Solochi welcomed the partnership and assured full commitment to the initiative.
“Honorable Minister, we appreciate your trust in ZNS. We shall not disappoint you, especially as this aligns with the Presidential priorities. We are ready to begin assessments this week as the legal team drafts the MoU,” he said.
Meanwhile Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Himba Cheelo, noted that this collaboration would enhance breeding efficiency, promote modern livestock management practices, create jobs for the local people, and significantly contribute to national food security and economic growth.
