The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has announced that 36,651 newly registered voters—19,699 males and 16,952 females—would be certified and added to the voter register.

This will bring the total number of registered voters to 7,073,513 (3,299,453 males and 3,774,060 females), up from 7,036,862 (3,279,747 males and 3,757,115 females).

ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis also announced plans to conduct a nationwide mass voter registration exercise in the second quarter of 2025 as part of preparations for the 2026 general election.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting on the electoral roadmap and Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) at Mulungushi International Conference Centre (MICC) in Lusaka on Tuesday, Zaloumis urged broad support for the process.

“The updated register will be the valid voter roll for all by-elections until the next certification or the 2026 general election certification,” she said.

Zaloumis emphasized the importance of the exercise, stating that it aligned with the commission’s recently announced electoral roadmap.

“As part of our ongoing efforts, the Commission has been registering voters under the Continuous Registration of Voters since June 2022. The first certification of the register took place in February 2024 for those who registered between June and December 2022,” she said.

Zaloumis further explained that the ECZ was now preparing for the next phase—the certification of the Register of Voters for those who registered between January 2023 and February 2024. The commission plans to finalize this process on February 25, 2025.

She also provided an update on electoral reforms, noting that the Electoral Reform Technical Committee (ERTC) had completed a comprehensive desk review and received submissions from across the country.

“This included public sittings in provincial headquarters and written submissions from all districts through Town Clerks and Council Secretaries. These submissions have now been consolidated, and the ERTC is in the process of preparing its report,” Zaloumis said.

She assured stakeholders that the ECZ would continue to provide updates as the process unfolds.
