UPND Bahati aspirant, Mulenga, fingers weak party structures for Petauke loss, calls for forensic probe

United Party for National Development (UPND) aspiring candidate for Bahati Constituency in the 2026 elections, Katwai Mulenga, has urged President Hakainde Hichilema to conduct a forensic probe of party structures.

Mulenga stated that the investigation should extend to some senior government officials and heads of departments, following UPND’s electoral defeat in the Petauke Central by-election.

Speaking to Zambia Monitor, he expressed concern over the party’s lack of mobilisation, empowerment for its followers and foot soldiers, as well as inadequate resources and transport.

He cautioned against hypocrisy and self-serving leadership, alleging that some senior officials were failing to provide the President with accurate information.

“The voting pattern in the last by-elections is not impressive. People have decided to choose the candidate of their choice despite the political party,” Mulenga said.

He warned that delays in dismissing senior officials who were frustrating government efforts could cost UPND in 2026.

Mulenga further claimed that some appointees were cowardly and ineffective, failing to articulate the UPND manifesto and the government’s achievements over the past three years.

“The people who led former president Edgar Lungu are the ones now surrounding President Hakainde Hichilema, and others are still fighting to get back to the corridors of power at the expense of party old members,” he said.

He reminded the President that the party’s one-million-vote margin in the 2021 general elections was insufficient given the current political climate.
