Group blames rising political tensions for low voter turnout in Petauke by-elections, calls for electoral reforms

The Advocates for Democratic Governance Foundation (ADEG) has raised concerns over political violence and growing mistrust among politicians, citing the recently held Petauke Constituency by-elections as a worrying indicator ahead of the 2026 general elections.

ADEG Executive Director, Gideon Musonda, stated that if these issues remained unaddressed, they could undermine the credibility of future elections.

In a statement issued in Lusaka on Sunday, Musonda noted that violence and high tensions in the Petauke by-elections contributed to a low voter turnout of 38 percent.

He called for genuine dialogue to foster a peaceful political environment that prioritizes national development.

“The Electoral Commission of Zambia must enhance stakeholder engagement to address the increasing mistrust in the institution, especially among political parties,” Musonda said.

He also urged the ECZ to expedite the work of the Electoral Reforms Technical Committee (ERTC) so that proposed reforms can be implemented in time for the 2026 elections.

Musonda highlighted that the legislative session of Parliament, opening on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, presented a crucial opportunity to advance reforms that would strengthen the electoral process and promote peaceful elections.

“The lack of trust in institutions, particularly the Electoral Commission of Zambia and Zambia Police by the opposition, is a major concern and must be addressed,” he stated.

Musonda emphasized the need for both institutions to execute their mandates impartially and engage stakeholders effectively.

He stressed that promoting tolerance and dialogue was essential for maintaining peace during electoral processes.

“ADEG remains committed to promoting democratic governance and peaceful elections in Zambia,” he said.

Musonda urged all stakeholders to work together to curb electoral violence and mistrust, ensuring a credible and peaceful election process leading up to 2026.
