Health Minister, Elijah Muchima, has launched an oral cholera vaccination exercise in Kasumbalesa to combat the spread of cholera in the border area.

The vaccine provided around 80 percent protection for a year.

At the flagging off event on Saturday, Muchima encouraged the local residents to get vaccinated.

To set an example, Minister Muchima, along with Mines and Mineral Development Minister, Paul Kabuswe, who is also Area Member of Parliament for Chililabombwe and Copperbelt Province Minister Elisha Matambo, received the vaccine themselves.

As of the launch, over 32,000 residents of Chililabombwe District had reportedly already been vaccinated.

“It is worth noting that oral cholera vaccines like the one administered in Kasumbalesa have been shown to be effective in preventing cholera outbreaks,” Muchima said.
