Luapula police chief says over 100 officers deployed to check violence in Pambashe by-election, warns troublemakers

Luapula Province Police Commanding Officer, Yuyi Mwala, has warned political parties contesting the Pambashe parliamentary by-election against engaging in violence, stressing that law enforcement officers will take swift action against troublemakers.

Speaking to journalists in Kawambwa, Mwala assured the public that police officers were prepared to maintain law and order, drawing from their experience in previous by-elections.

He emphasized that political parties must adhere to the campaign timetable to prevent clashes and ensure a credible electoral process.

Mwala confirmed that more than 100 police officers had been deployed to secure the by-election, warning that anyone causing disturbances will face the full force of the law.

He urged all parties to uphold peace and respect the democratic process.

The Pambashe by-election, set for February 6, 2025, has attracted four candidates.

Forum for Democracy and Development is backing William Mwenya, while the Democratic Union has fielded Honorato Kanunsha.

The Socialist Party is supporting James Chabi, and the United Party for National Development is backing Justine Kapema.

The seat fell vacant following the conviction of former Pambashe Member of Parliament Ronald Chitotela, leading to the by-election.
