Socialist party, ruling UPND tackle each other over Pambashe by-election

The Socialist Party (SP) has accused the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) of engaging in vote buying ahead of the Pambashe parliamentary by-election scheduled for February 6, 2025.

Speaking in Kawambwa on Tuesday, SP’s senior presidential adviser, Brian Hapunda, claimed the UPND had resorted to bribing voters out of fear of losing the election.

“They are giving K50 to each person with a voter’s card while bribing village heads with K100 each, thereby undermining democracy,” Hapunda alleged.

He further accused the ruling party of disregarding the campaign timetable set by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

“We have reported this matter to ECZ Commissioner MacDonald Chipenzi and the police regarding UPND’s vote-buying tactics and failure to adhere to the campaign schedule,” he said.

Despite these allegations, Hapunda expressed confidence in the SP’s chances of winning the Pambashe seat, citing the party’s strong campaign message.

However, UPND campaign manager Elvis Nkandu dismissed the accusations, describing them as the “last kicks of a dying horse.”

“Those accusing us of buying votes have sensed danger and are now resorting to unwarranted allegations. How can we buy voters? Our focus is on convincing the electorate, not coercion,” Nkandu stated.

Meanwhile, four candidates have successfully filed their nominations for the Pambashe parliamentary by-election.
