The Ministry of Youth, Sport and Arts has dismissed allegations of government interference in the upcoming Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) elections set for March 29, 2025.
Sports Minister, Elvis Nkandu, refuted claims that the government influenced the withdrawal of any candidate, including football legend Kalusha Bwalya, or was backing any individual in the election process.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Nkandu said reports suggesting government support for specific candidates, including Keith Mweemba, were false.
“The FAZ elections are an independent process, and the government has no role in selecting or endorsing candidates. These matters should be handled by football stakeholders in line with FAZ and FIFA regulations. We remain committed to promoting transparency and fair play in all sports governance structures in Zambia,” he stated.
Nkandu also urged those questioning Bwalya’s withdrawal from the race to engage him directly instead of spreading misinformation.
The ministry called on all stakeholders, including the media, to verify information before publication to avoid misleading the public and undermining the integrity of the FAZ elections.
On Monday, Godfrey Chikumbi became the first to lodge in his nomination papers at Football House in Lusaka Monday morning.
Chikumbi immediately after presenting his nomination papers addressed journalists at the Football house.
He called for issue- based campaigns among candidates ahead of the poll billed for Livingstone.
He gave a comprehensive account of what he intended to do to fix Zambian football.
