The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) has expressed disappointment over reported incidents of electoral violence in Petauke district involving the United Party for National Development (UPND) and the National Congress Party (NCP).
ECZ Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, said the Commission does not condone any form of violence, warning that such acts undermine voter participation and contradict democratic principles.
Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka on Friday at ECZ Headquarters, Zaloumis stated that the Commission had convened a meeting to address allegations raised by the NCP, which included violations of the campaign timetable, intimidation, and the misuse of government resources.

“The Commission invited the Zambia Police to provide clarity on the reported incidents, emphasizing that any criminal acts would be addressed within the law,” Zaloumis said.
She urged all political players to respect each other’s space and engage in peaceful competition during elections.
Meanwhile, Zaloumis dismissed claims that ECZ had introduced a new voter register, clarifying that the 2021 voters’ roll remained in use, with only minor updates through continuous voter registration.
“Electoral credibility is a shared responsibility, and all parties must engage constructively in the democratic process,” she emphasized.
ECZ had since summoned all political parties contesting the February 6, 2025, Petauke by-election following the violence that marred campaign activities.
