Relatives of the late Councillor Dominic Mwakwa have refused to proceed with his burial, citing suspicions of witchcraft surrounding his untimely death.

As a result, his body was returned to the mortuary on Wednesday.

According to a report accessed by Zambia Monitor from Lukwanga Radio Station in Kawambwa, the family has vowed not to bury the late civic leader until those they believed to be responsible for his death were identified and held accountable.

Mwakwa, who served as Councillor for Kala Ward in Kawambwa Central Constituency, passed away on January 18, 2025, following a short illness.

His death has caused a stir among relatives, who suspect foul play.

A valedictory service was held at the council chamber, where government officials and local leaders paid their last respects.

Newly elected Kawambwa Central Member of Parliament Musonda Nason expressed deep sorrow over Mwakwa’s passing, describing him as a dedicated public servant.

Deputy Council Chairperson Mulenga Daniel also mourned Mwakwa, remembering him as a hard-working leader committed to fostering development, not just in Kala Ward but across the district.

Despite the tributes, tension among family members has delayed the burial.

The late councillor’s body remains at the Kawambwa District Hospital Mortuary as his relatives await clarification on what they believe to be unnatural circumstances surrounding his death.

Local authorities and family members are expected to hold further discussions to resolve the misunderstanding and allow Mwakwa to be laid to rest.
