A 49-year-old man in Southern Province has been arrested after police found him in possession of a human bone suspected to belong to an albino.

Southern Province Deputy Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo confirmed the arrest, following a report by 68-year-old Christine Zingwaya of Mweete Village in Chief Chongo. She reported that the grave of her late uncle, Martin McDonald Wash, an albino who passed away in 2000, had been exhumed.

According to Namalongo, the report was incidented on October 8, 2024, after the discovery was made by Mabuto Charles, aged 71, in Chimpati Village, Monze District.

“Police visited the scene and confirmed that the grave had been tampered with. The relatives were advised to rebury the exposed clothes and blankets while awaiting forensic examination,” Namalongo said in a statement issued in Choma on Tuesday.

The investigation led to the arrest of Nicholas Habeenzu of Ng’andu Village, who was found with a human arm bone on January 5, 2025.

Upon interrogation, Habeenzu admitted that the bone came from Wash’s grave.

He further implicated an accomplice, Rayford Hanyama, who is currently on the run.

Habeenzu was taken to the scene and charged with the offense, pending a court appearance.

Namalongo added that DNA testing was still required to confirm whether the bone belongs to Wash, as investigations continue.
