Labour and Social Security Minister, Brenda Tambatamba, has called on the African Federation of Miners and Mineral Wealth to promote the well-being of workers in the mining sector.

Tambatamba said the government prioritized the welfare of workers hence, the African Federation of Miners and Mineral Wealth, should bargain for better conditions of service in the mining sector that will be in tandem with government’s aspirations.

According to a statement issued by Mwaka Ndawa, the Principal Public Relations Officer at the Ministry, the Minister was speaking on Friday, during a business dinner held by the Federation in Lusaka.

The Federation has organized a five-day exchange program being hosted by the Mine Workers’ Union of Zambia (MUZ) from January, 16 to January 21, 2025, aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation and to share knowledge about the mining sector.

Tambatamba also emphasized that economic transformation and job creation were the key areas of priority in the development plan.

“When President Hakainde Hichilema talks about the champions’ league this is what he means. We are growing workers organizations. This government says it shall not walk alone without the workers of Zambia; neither will the workers stand alone. We believe in Tripartism, you are our social partners in the country and across Africa,” she said.

Tambatamba called on the Federation to collaborate with the government in the shaping of policy in the mining sector, the regulative framework that governs the mining sector.

She stated that the government was working with the Workers’ Organizations in line with the legal framework in ensuring that the welfare of workers was put first.

“We value Tripartism and we shall continue supporting the workers movement,” Tambatamba said.

African Federation of Miners and Mineral Wealth Assistant Treasurer, Ashraf Shehata said the root for progression for Africa is its resources.

“If we don’t defend these Resources on which the sustainable development depends who will defend us? We would like to establish a company for all unions to exploit, and benefit from the natural resources of Africa,” Shehata said.

MUZ president Joseph Chewe commended President Hakainde and Tambatamba for their exemplary leadership in seeing to it that there were no more strikes in the mining sector.

“We need to ensure that there is industrial harmony,” Chewe said.
