The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has opposed former Kabushi lawmaker, Bowman Lusambo’s renewed application for bail, arguing he has not demonstrated exceptional circumstances to justify his release pending appeal.
Lusambo, who is serving a four-year sentence for corruption charges, cited his role as the sole breadwinner for his family and his wife’s medical condition as grounds for bail.
However, ACC legal and prosecutions officer, Chawezi Nalwenga, dismissed these claims, stating they lacked merit and did not indicate a likelihood of success in overturning his conviction.
Nalwenga highlighted that Lusambo’s case is being handled by the Economic and Financial Crimes Court (EFCC), which operates on strict timelines, ensuring appeals are resolved within five months.
She argued this undermines concerns about him serving a significant portion of his sentence before the appeal’s conclusion.
The ACC reiterated that Lusambo had failed to present any exceptional circumstances warranting bail, maintaining that his concerns about delays in the appeal process were baseless.
