The Zambia National Service (ZNS) Commander, Lieutenant General Engineer Maliti Solochi II, has issued a stern warning that any ZNS personnel found involved in the smuggling of mealie meal and its products will be immediately dismissed.

Solochi’s remarks follow credible reports implicating uniformed personnel, particularly on the Copperbelt, in helping smuggle the staple food out of the country.

Solochi made the statement during a courtesy call on Copperbelt Provincial Permanent Secretary Augustine Kasongo in Ndola on Tuesday.

He emphasized that ZNS officers must adhere to the highest standards of integrity, as they were the nation’s first line of defense against corruption and unethical practices.

“Officers must uphold the highest standards of integrity. Any ZNS personnel found abetting the smuggling of mealie meal will face instant dismissal,” Solochi stated.

“This is a noble uniform, and those who wear it must understand that the welfare of the country comes first.”

The Commander condemned the practice as a betrayal of the Service’s duty and vowed that express investigations would be conducted.

Officers found guilty would be dealt with decisively, he added.

Solochi also commended the integrity of some officers who have assisted in exposing the culprits, affirming the Service’s commitment to rooting out corruption and maintaining discipline within its ranks.

“We are here on a two-day working visit to sensitize our personnel about the importance of anti-smuggling operations. Unfortunately, I have received reports with credible evidence that some of our soldiers are involved in these illegal activities,” Solochi said.

In response, Permanent Secretary Kasongo praised ZNS for its continued efforts in the province, not only in fostering development but also in combating illegal activities like smuggling.

“We are pleased with ZNS efforts in addressing smuggling, which has significantly decreased in comparison to previous years. Your presence here reaffirms your commitment to this cause,” Kasongo said.

He also commended the professionalism and coordination of ZNS officers, noting their substantial contributions to the province’s development agenda.

Kasongo assured the ZNS Commander of the province’s full support in eradicating illegal activities and promoting sustainable development.
