CAF postpones CHAN tournament to August, 2025 over infrastructure delays in East Africa

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the Total Energies African Nations Championship (CHAN), initially scheduled for 2024, to August 2025.

The tournament was set to be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The decision followed recommendations by CAF’s technical and infrastructure experts, who advised that more time was needed for the host nations to complete essential preparations, including stadium construction, training facilities, and upgrades to hotels and hospitals.

In a statement issued Tuesday, CAF’s Communication Department acknowledged significant progress in the three countries but emphasized the need for further improvements to meet the standards required for hosting the prestigious tournament.

“The CAF technical and infrastructure experts have advised that more time is needed to ensure the infrastructure and facilities meet the necessary levels for a successful CHAN in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda,” the statement read.

CAF president, Patrice Motsepe, praised the commitments of Kenyan President, William Ruto, Tanzanian President, Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan, President Yoweri Museveni, toward ensuring the tournament’s success.

“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of football infrastructure in the three countries,” Motsepe stated, expressing confidence that all preparations would be completed by August 2025.

The new tournament dates will be announced later.

Meanwhile, CAF has confirmed that the draws for CHAN will take place on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 20:00 Nairobi time.
