The Zambian government has urged Chinese investors to explore opportunities in water transport on Lake Tanganyika and to support the expansion of Mpulungu Harbor.
Northern Province Permanent Secretary, Bernard Mpundu, emphasized that such investments would enhance trade between Zambia and the Great Lakes region, including East African nations.
Mpundu made these remarks on Tuesday when he met with a Chinese delegation led by Chinese Ambassador to Zambia, Hang Jing, at his office in Kasama.
“The potential is vast. Eastern Congo and neighboring countries rely on Zambia for trade, and our collaboration with China is key to expanding Mpulungu Harbor,” said Mpundu.
He expressed confidence that Chinese investors would also explore opportunities in agriculture, tourism, and other sectors in the province.

Ambassador Han reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Zambia’s infrastructure development, particularly in road networks, to improve connectivity within Zambia and across the continent.
“I am aware that President Hakainde Hichilema has a strong vision to turn Zambia’s challenges into opportunities. Through the revitalization of TAZARA and the construction of the Lobito Corridor, a continental transport link could be established,” Han said.
He acknowledged President Hichilema’s ambition to position Zambia as a key regional hub and confirmed that China would back this vision.
Ambassador Han also discussed China’s growing interest in Zambia’s transport infrastructure, including the revitalization of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway.
With China’s assistance, he believes Zambia can become a major transportation hub in Southern Africa, boosting connectivity and facilitating trade within the region.
