Police recover stolen vehicle after fatal shootout with suspected robbers

Two suspected armed robbers have been killed in a gunfight with police officers following the theft of a taxicab in Lusaka.

The vehicle, a Toyota IST with registration number BAV 2007, was reported stolen by cab driver, Emmanuel Kalinda, who was attacked by four armed assailants at Chingwele Cemetery.

According to Zambia Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga, the incident occurred around 11:00 hours when Kalinda, operating as a Yango driver, picked up two males and two females who requested a ride to Chingwele Cemetery.

Upon arrival, the passengers turned on him, brandishing a pistol and threatening to shoot as they stole his vehicle.

Kalinda, aged 35, quickly reported the robbery to Matero Police Station and informed officers that the vehicle was equipped with a GPS tracking device.

Police traced the stolen vehicle to Chifundo Market in George Compound, where an exchange of gunfire took place between officers and the suspects.

Two male suspects, aged between 30 and 35, were fatally shot during the confrontation.

They were rushed to the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) but were pronounced dead upon arrival.

Hamoonga emphasized the importance of installing security gadgets such as GPS trackers in vehicles, which greatly enhance the chances of recovering stolen property and apprehending offenders.

The Zambia Police Service urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station, reaffirming their commitment to the safety and security of all citizens.
