Citizens First (CF) leader, Harry Kalaba, has called for the disbanding of the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), alleging it is biased and poses a threat to the country’s democracy.

Speaking on Radio Phoenix’s on Friday, Kalaba accused the ECZ of being composed of United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres, undermining its professionalism and impartiality.

He expressed concern over the commission’s integrity, particularly following the Kawambwa Constituency by-election, where he claimed the ECZ exhibited favoritism.

Kalaba stated that the ECZ’s mandate to conduct free and fair elections was being compromised, eroding public trust in Zambia’s electoral system.

“In the context of Zambia’s upcoming elections, it’s crucial to address these concerns and ensure the ECZ maintains its independence and impartiality. The country’s democratic principles depend on a fair and transparent electoral process,” he said.

Kalaba revealed that CF had sued the ECZ over alleged bias during the Pambashe Constituency by-election nominations.

He also stated that the CF candidate was barred from filing his nomination on the scheduled day, prompting the party to file a petition citing errors and mistreatment by the commission.

“The court’s decision will be crucial in determining whether the ECZ’s actions were lawful and fair. Historically, authenticated voter’s cards and verified information have been accepted during by-elections.

“However, the ECZ’s conduct in Pambashe raises serious concerns about partisanship and unequal treatment,” he added.

Kalaba confirmed that the party had taken advantage of the seven-day window to challenge the commission’s actions and was awaiting a legal determination.
