Company claims over 400,000 benefitted from fecal sludge management programme in 2024

The Lusaka Water and Sewerage Company (LWSC) claims that more than 400,000 individuals directly benefited from its fecal sludge management programme in 2024, following the successful emptying of 23,500 household pit latrines.

According to LWSC Managing Director Dennis Malambo, the programme removed over 16,723 cubic meters of sludge, leading to notable improvements in public health within peri-urban areas.

Speaking on Thursday during a review of the company’s 2024 performance, Malambo also claimed that sewer connections were established in neighborhoods such as Chaisa, Kanyama, and Emmasdale.

Additionally, key sewer lines in Lilanda Compound and Kaunda Square were rehabilitated, improving sanitation systems and living conditions, according to him.

“Investing in sanitation infrastructure is crucial not only for infrastructure development but also for enhancing residents’ well-being,” Malambo said.

However, Malambo highlighted financial challenges due to unpaid bills, which he claimed negatively affect service delivery.

To address this, he said LWSC implemented mass disconnections for overdue accounts and plans to take legal action in 2025, leveraging the Credit Reference Bureau to hold defaulters accountable.

“We’ve introduced flexible payment plans to assist customers with high outstanding bills while ensuring financial sustainability,” Malambo stated.

To improve water supply and billing accuracy, LWSC is reportedly procuring 63,415 meters, including 59,415 post-paid and 4,000 pre-paid meters.

Malambo stated that this would empower customers to monitor water usage effectively.

Currently, LWSC produces 330 million liters of water daily against a demand of 480 million liters, serving about 144,000 customers in Lusaka Province.

“The focus for 2025 will be on expanding network coverage, especially in underserved and newly developed areas,” Malambo said.
