Former Patriotic Front (PF) Deputy Secretary-General, Mumbi Phiri, has been arrested in connection with an alleged aggravated robbery incident reported in Kawambwa District.

Police Spokesperson, Rae Hamoonga, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued in Lusaka on Tuesday evening, following a report made by Boldwin Chilambikwa, 28, of Katungulu Village, Chief Mushota, Kawambwa.

According to Hamoonga, the complainant alleged that his Infinix cellphone, valued at K3,800, and cash amounting to K20,000 were stolen by a man identified as Peter, who was reportedly in the company of Phiri.

The incident occurred on December 18, 2024, at around 18:00 hours at Chisheta Primary School. Chilambikwa was accompanying the Minister of Green Economy and Environment, Mike Mposha, and other UPND members when the confrontation happened.

Hamoonga stated that a group allegedly led by Phiri accused the UPND members of collecting voter’s cards from the public in collaboration with Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) officials.

In the ensuing altercation, Peter reportedly used a Taser gun on Chilambikwa, causing him to fall.

While incapacitated, the suspect allegedly stole his cellphone and cash, which the complainant said had been given to him by the Minister for fuel expenses.

Police have since opened a docket of aggravated robbery, with investigations underway.

“The Zambia Police Service is committed to thoroughly investigating this matter to ensure justice prevails. We appeal to members of the public with additional information to come forward and assist in the investigation,” Hamoonga said.
