The Zambia Police Service has cautioned TONSE Alliance against any actions that may incite violence or breach public peace.
The TONSE Alliance recently directed its members and supporters to defend themselves against political violence from the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) cadres, using “any means necessary.”
Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga in a statement issued in Lusaka on Monday raised concerns about the resolutions urging members and supporters to “defend themselves using any means necessary” in response to alleged political violence.
Hamoonga emphasized that no individual or group was above the law, stating that the maintenance of law and order is the sole responsibility of the Zambia Police Service.
He warned that any attempts by political players to take the law into their own hands will be met with the full force of the law.
“We urge all political parties to report incidents of violence to the nearest police station, where they will be thoroughly investigated,” Hamoonga said.
He stated that the Zambia Police Service was impartial in executing its mandate and was committed to ensuring that the law was applied fairly and equitably, regardless of political affiliation.
Hamoonga added that allegations of Police bias or failure to enforce the law equitably should be formally reported to relevant oversight bodies for investigation and redress.
“As we approach the upcoming by-elections and beyond, we appeal to all political leaders and their supporters to exercise restraint and conduct their activities within the confines of the law,” he appealed.
Hamoonga reaffirmed the Zambia Police Service’s commitment to continue engaging with all stakeholders to ensure that the electoral process was peaceful, transparent, and free from violence.
He reiterated the Police’s unwavering commitment to upholding peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Zambia remained a beacon of democracy and stability.
