The government has claimed that one million farmers had been supported under the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP) for the 2024/2025 farming season.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, John Muluongoti, said that 97 percent of the targeted farmers had received their support, while over 22,000 farmers (three percent of the target) were yet to collect their inputs.
In an interview with Zambia Monitor, Muluongoti pointed out that the remaining farmers had already paid their deposits but were yet to collect their inputs.
“We encourage the remaining farmers to promptly collect their inputs,” he said.
Muluongoti also advised farmers to monitor moisture levels carefully before planting to ensure optimal crop growth and yield.
He further encouraged those who had already planted to monitor for pests and remain hopeful during dry spells, particularly in the southern part of Zambia.
The Permanent Secretary noted that the southern region was experiencing favorable rainfall, conducive to agriculture.
He urged farmers in the southern provinces to follow good agricultural practices and expressed satisfaction with the implementation and coverage of the FISP programme, which he believed would help mitigate the effects of climate change from the 2023/2024 farming season.
