The government has reassured citizens of sufficient national fuel stocks, despite stockouts reported at filling stations in several districts.
Energy Regulation Board (ERB) Director General, Elijah Sichone, disclosed on Friday, December 20, 2024, that Zambia currently holds 30.4 million litres of diesel and 10.2 million litres of petrol stored in various facilities across the country.
Speaking at a joint press briefing with Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), Sichone identified Chililabombwe, Chongwe, Kawambwa, Kitwe, Lusaka, and Mkushi as the districts most affected by fuel shortages.
“With daily consumption at 4.2 million litres of diesel and 1.6 million litres of petrol, the country has a 7.2-day supply,” Sichone said.
He urged motorists not to panic-buy, assuring that fuel stocks continue to flow into the country to sustain supply.

He further explained that logistical disruptions at Beira Port and policy changes in Zimbabwe, which restricted petroleum exports, have impacted fuel deliveries.
However, Sichone emphasized that the government, through ERB, would provide regular updates throughout the festive season.
OMCs present at the meeting assured the public of steady fuel supplies in affected districts by early next week, confirming that trucks carrying stocks are already in transit.
