Zambia Premier League decries rising hooliganism, warns against misconduct

The Zambian Premier League (ZPL) has expressed grave concern over the increasing incidents of hooliganism and unsportsmanlike behavior during league matches, which threaten the integrity of the sport and the safety of fans.

Recent disruptions included missile-throwing at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium during the Week 15 Kitwe derby between Power Dynamos and Nkana Football Club.

Similar misconduct was reported during the Week 17 matches at Railway Stadium in Kabwe between Kabwe Warriors and Nkana, and at Nkoloma Stadium, where Atletico Lusaka faced ZESCO United.

ZPL Head of Communications, Christina Zulu, in a statement issued on Friday, confirmed that investigations into the incidents were underway.

ZPL Chairman, Kephas Katongo, assured stakeholders that decisive measures will be taken to curb the alarming rise in hooliganism and unsportsmanlike behavior.

“The alarming rise in such behavior is unacceptable and must be curbed immediately. We issue a strong warning to fans, coaches, players, and referees against engaging in such acts,” Katongo said.

He emphasised the need to protect the league’s reputation, followed widely across Africa and beyond, by promoting sportsmanship and accepting match outcomes in good faith.

Katongo urged security personnel at stadiums to strictly enforce law and order, noting that some fan actions border on criminality and must be treated accordingly.

“The sale of beer, particularly in bottles, is prohibited in stadia as it poses a significant safety risk,” Katongo reiterated.

Referees were also reminded of their responsibility to ensure fair officiating, with Katongo warning that poor performance would result in penalties.

“ZPL will not hesitate to ban individuals, including referees, whose actions disrupt the game. Modern technologies used to capture match events will ensure accountability,” he stated.

Katongo reaffirmed ZPL’s commitment to creating a safe, professional, and enjoyable environment for all stakeholders, while preserving the integrity and reputation of Zambian football.
