Power Dynamos asked to explain fans ‘unruly’ conduct during Kopala derby

The Zambia Premier League (ZPL) has given Power Dynamos up to Friday to explain themselves over the conduct of their supporters during the Kitwe derby against Nkana in a week 15 fixture at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola a fortnight ago.

According to a letter sent to Power dated December 18, 2024, Power supporters misconducted themselves in the match they lost to Nkana 2-1.

“We write to formally notify you of the commencement of an investigation into the conduct of Power Dynamos Football Club’s supporters during the league match against Nkana FC held at Levy Mwanwasa Stadium on 7th December 2024,” wrote ZPL chief executive officer Joseph Chimpampwe.

Chimpampwe said in the 17th minute of the match, following Nkana’s opening goal, several missiles were thrown onto the pitch by individuals identified as Power Dynamos fans. This unruly behaviour disrupted the match proceedings, posed a significant risk to the safety of players, match officials, and other spectators, and brought the game into disrepute.

He said such behaviour and actions were completely unacceptable and come under the offences stipulated in Article 67 (3) of the 2021 FAZ Disciplinary Code and a danger to all persons present at match venues.

“Please be reminded that clubs are held strictly liable for the behaviour of their supporters, in accordance with Article 67 (2) of the FAZ Disciplinary Code of 2021.”

Chimpampwe said that at the conclusion of ZPL investigation and with reference to its findings, some of the actions that maybe be taken against Power include charges, punitive fines and other administrative penalties may be imposed following the conclusion of the disciplinary process.

“You are hereby requested to provide a detailed report on the incident, including measures taken by the club to control fan behaviour during the match and any actions or statements made by club representatives to de-escalate the situation. Kindly submit your report no later than close of business of 20th December 2025. Failure to comply may result in further disciplinary action,” Chimpampwe said.

He reiterated ZPL’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the league and ensuring a safe and fair environment for all stakeholders.

“We trust that Power Dynamos FC will take this matter with the seriousness it deserves and implement the necessary measures to prevent a recurrence,” Chimpampwe said.
