The Lusaka Magistrates’ Court will hear a rare case next year involving a 22-year-old student accused of unlawful possession of a live tortoise, classified as a protected trophy under Zambian wildlife laws.

Muyunda Mwangala, a resident of Rockfield, Chalala, appeared before the court and pleaded not guilty to the charge, which falls under Section 97 (1) (2) of the Zambia Wildlife Act No. 14 of 2015, as outlined in Statutory Instrument No. 41 of 2016.

According to the prosecution, Mwangala, alongside unknown accomplices, was allegedly found in possession of the government-protected tortoise without proper authorization on November 12, 2024, in Lusaka District.

Magistrate Mwandi Sakala has set January 23, 2025, as the trial date.
