Kitwe clergy, Chileshya, raises the alarm over alleged encroachment of Konkola Copper Mine by illegal miners

Charles Chileshya, a Kitwe based clergyman, is troubled by the encroachments and illegal mining happening in Konkola Copper Mine (KCM) areas.

The clergyman said these security, boundary markings and potential encroachment of KCM’s facilities, particularly tailings dams like TD3 were pressing concerns that need immediate attention.

Chileshya in an interview with journalists on Tuesday stated that with Vedanta at the helm of KCM operations, it was crucial they addressed these concerns to ensure the well-being of the community and safeguard these assets and facilities for the people of Zambia.

He said the rumours of a possible hostile takeover of TD3 by disgruntled individuals or groups were alarming and it was essential KCM took immediate action with the help of government to prevent such acts.

“KCM must verify and secure their site boundaries, prevent encroachment, and provide transparent information about the status of TD3 and other copper bearing assets.

“They should also engage with stakeholders, including local communities and employees to ensure concerns are heard and addressed. Unfortunately, incidents of illegal mining have already resulted in loss of life in Chingola, these tragedies highlight the urgency of addressing these concerns,” Pastor Chileshya said.
