Two people have died following a hit-and-run road traffic accident in Mpongwe district, Copperbelt Province, police have confirmed.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner, Peacewell Mweemba, said in a statement issued on Sunday that the accident occurred on Saturday evening along Machiya Road, near Mpongwe River.
It involved an unregistered Boxer motorbike that was struck by an unidentified vehicle whose driver fled the scene.
The motorbike rider, identified as 40-year-old Moses Kaunda of Mpongwe, sustained head injuries and a bruised right arm.

His passenger, identified only as Sakala, aged between 40 and 46, suffered a deep stomach cut and facial bruises.
Both victims were rushed to Mpongwe Mission Hospital, where they succumbed to their injuries.
Their bodies are currently in the hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem examination.
“The unknown vehicle involved in the accident sustained unidentified damages, and the driver fled the scene. Circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation,” Mweemba stated.
Police have urged anyone with information regarding the accident or the unidentified vehicle to come forward.
