The Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC) has confirmed a raid on the home of former Western Province Permanent Secretary, Danny Bukali, in Lusaka’s Nyumba Yanga area.
DEC Public Relations Officer, Allan Tamba, in a statement issued Thursday, said the operation was conducted on Wednesday, November 4, 2024.
He did not disclose the reason for the raid but assured the public that updates would be provided once investigations are concluded.
“The Commission wishes to confirm that yesterday, Wednesday 4th November 2024, there was an operation conducted in Lusaka’s Nyumba Yanga area at the house of the former Western Province Permanent Secretary, Danny Bukali,” Tamba stated.
In a separate set of operations, the DEC arrested several suspects, including a Tanzanian national, for trafficking in cannabis and cocaine under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act No. 35 of 2021.
At Chanida Border in Eastern Province, the Commission apprehended Kumuzinga Phiri, 47, for trafficking 105 balls of cannabis and loose cannabis weighing 28.5 kilogrammes.
In Nyimba District, David Zulu, 36, was arrested for trafficking 23 kilograms of dry loose cannabis, while Shadrach Mwanza, 44, was apprehended with 9.5 kilograms of cannabis.
In Kasempa District, suspects Nomai Sitali, 50, and Astridah Musana, 44, were arrested for possessing 0.48 grams of suspected cocaine.
A complex operation from Chirundu to Lusaka led to the arrest of Tanzanian national Ally Omary Hassan, 48, for smuggling 10.4 kilogrammes of high-grade cannabis hidden in stereo speakers on a bus traveling from South Africa.
In Central Province’s Kabwe, DEC operatives arrested Rose Nali, 37, also known as Kutemba, for possessing 668 sachets and two pre-packs of dry loose cannabis weighing 5.13 kilogrammes.
The operation also seized K6,256 in cash suspected to be proceeds of crime.
In North-Western Province, DEC apprehended Justine Chipili, 45, from Lusaka’s Chawama area, for trafficking 228 sachets and 1.21 kilogrammes of cannabis.
He was operating a boutique in Kasempa District.
Tamba assured the public of the Commission’s dedication to combating organized crime, calling for continued vigilance and support.
“The DEC remains committed to safeguarding the nation from the adverse effects of organized crime while ensuring the effective enforcement of the law,” he said.
Tamba said citizens were encouraged to report suspicious activities involving drugs or money laundering to DEC offices nationwide.
