Senior Chief Kopa of the Bisa people in Kanchibiya District, Muchinga Province, has called on politicians from both the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) and the opposition to embrace peaceful politics and avoid actions that threaten Zambia’s stability.
The traditional leader stated the need for inclusivity in the electoral process and respect for the people’s choices, urging politicians to uphold democracy and avoid undermining voters’ decisions.
“We should leave the choice of leaders to our people. They collectively remain wise and are the final authority in this area. Their wishes must be respected,” Senior Chief Kopa said in a statement to Zambia Monitor on Monday.
Responding to queries about the state of politics in Zambia and ongoing investigations involving former President Edgar Lungu’s family, the chief expressed concern about the face-off between political leaders.
He advocated for harmonious relations between President Hakainde Hichilema and his predecessor, noting that mutual respect between current and former leaders would benefit the country.
“Former Heads of State should not spend their lives entangled in legal battles or political confrontations. They deserve respect befitting the office they once held,” he said.
Referring to past incidents, Senior Chief Kopa highlighted the harassment faced by former presidents Frederick Chiluba and Rupiah Banda.
The traditional leader urged politicians to prioritise peace and focus on addressing issues that unite rather than divide the nation.
