Socialist Party President, Dr. Fred M’membe, has accused President Hakainde Hichilema of undermining the fight against corruption by failing to take decisive action against officials implicated in illegal activities.
Speaking to journalists at the party’s secretariat in Lusaka on Friday, M’membe alleged that President Hichilema was presiding over what he described as the most corrupt regime in Zambia’s history.
“The president is paralysed in fighting corruption due to his lack of moral authority to condemn or act against his lieutenants, as everyone is involved in some illegal activity,” M’membe said.
He further claimed that the corruption surrounding President Hichilema and his administration undermined the credibility of any anti-corruption efforts, calling them “a facade” without a thorough investigation into the president’s own actions.
“No decent or clean president could preside over such a corrupt regime without being deeply implicated himself. Mr. Hichilema’s failure to act stems from his own involvement,” he charged.

M’membe pointed to President Hichilema’s failure to declare his assets and business interests as evidence of potential corruption, suggesting this lack of transparency was fueling the issue.
“The undisclosed business interests of Mr. Hichilema are the source and incubator of all this corruption, and being in power has exposed him,” M’membe said.
He warned that public awareness of alleged corruption, cronyism, and undue influence on policymaking was growing and undermining Zambia’s democratic processes.
