Govt committed to successful execution of 2026 general elections— Vice President Nalumango

Vice President Mutale Nalumango has pledged government’s commitment to supporting the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) to successfully implement the 2026 general elections roadmap.

Nalumango noted that the successful implementation of the 2026 general elections roadmap would lead to the holding of the election on August 13, 2026.

The Vice President said this in a speech read on her behalf by acting Minister of Information and Media, Brenda Tambatamba, at the first Electoral Stakeholders Conference held at Mulungushi International Conference Centre (MICC) in Lusaka.

The Electoral Stakeholders Conference was under the theme “Zambia @60: Enhancing Electoral Integrity of the 2026 General Election.”

She also reiterated government’s commitment to strengthening the electoral process saying Zambia had an admirable track record of holding elections in accordance with the constitution.

“Elections are a cornerstone of democracy which provides a platform for citizens to exercise their right to choose their leaders and shape the country’s future,” Nalumango said

She stated that the success of Zambia’s electoral process did not only rely on the framework and regulations in place, but also on the active involvement of all stakeholders.

The Vice President urged participants to embrace the spirit of collaboration and engagement while exchanging ideas, identifying areas for improvement and proposing actionable solutions that will enhance the credibility of Zambia’s elections.

“One of the key activities in the 2026 general election roadmap is the electoral reform process which is underway and is being coordinated by an independent electoral technical committee appointed by ECZ,” Nalumango explained.

She stated that the conference was an important milestone to towards enhancing the integrity, transparency and inclusivity of Zambia’s electoral process.

Meanwhile, ECZ Board Chairperson, Mwangala Zaloumis, said the conference would explore opportunities and mitigate threats to Zambia’s electoral process.

“ECZ 2023-2017 strategic plan is anchored on Inclusiveness, participation and transparency reflecting the Commission’s commitment to stakeholder’s engagement in decision making,” Zaloumis said.
