UPPZ leader, Chanda, urges govt to relocate illegal miners to safer sites

The United Prosperous and Peaceful Zambia (UPPZ) leader, Charles Chanda, has called on the government to relocate illegal miners, commonly known as “Jerabos,” from Chingola to dormant open-pit mines across the country.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Chanda highlighted the dangers faced by Jerabos operating in unsafe conditions, emphasizing the need for a sustainable and safer solution.

“The Jerabos are working in unsafe conditions, which puts their lives at risk. We need to find a safer solution that allows them to work legally and protects their health,” Chanda said.

He proposed identifying unused mining sites nationwide to formalize the operations of the Jerabos and ensure compliance with safety regulations.

“By moving them to these dormant mines, we can give them an opportunity to earn a living without endangering their lives or the community,” Chanda added.

He stressed that a well-coordinated relocation plan could help reduce tensions in Chingola, where conflicts between local residents, the government, and illegal miners are escalating.

Chanda also noted that formalising their operations could enable the miners to contribute more effectively to Zambia’s economy.

“I hope the government considers this proposal, which could improve conditions for both the Jerabos and the community,” he said.

Chanda’s appeal comes amid growing concerns over the safety and socioeconomic implications of illegal mining activities in Chingola.
