Consumer association raises the alarm over abuse of alcohol, tobacco by youths in Lusaka

The Zambia Consumer Association (ZACA) has expressed concern over the rising abuse of alcohol and tobacco among youths in Lusaka’s central business district (CBD).

ZACA Executive Secretary, Juba Sakala, highlighted the indiscriminate sale of local alcoholic beverages such as Kachasu, spirits, and brandy, as well as tobacco products locally known as Sukho and Kubel, often sold to minors in violation of the law.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Sakala described the situation as alarming, warning that failure to address the issue could lead to an uncontrollable crisis.

“It is alarming to witness the sale of these alcoholic beverages in a manner akin to selling fruit in the CBD, and tobacco products such as cigarettes, Sukho, and Kubel are also being sold indiscriminately, including to minors, which is strictly prohibited,” Sakala said.

Sakala urged local authorities to intensify enforcement of existing laws, noting that Zambia already has adequate regulations to curb such practices.

“We call on local authorities and stakeholders to proactively monitor and enforce these laws to create a safer environment for children rather than perpetuating this dangerous situation,” he advised.

ZACA stressed the need for collaboration among authorities and stakeholders to restore order and protect vulnerable youths in the city.
