ZICTA warns against joining suspicious WhatsApp groups, clicking unverified links

The Zambia Information and Communications Technology Authority (ZICTA) has cautioned the public against joining suspicious WhatsApp groups and clicking on unverified links, citing a rise in account hacking incidents.

ZICTA Manager Corporate Communications, Hanford Chaaba, expressed concern over the increasing reports of hacked WhatsApp accounts and urged users to exercise caution with unsolicited messages containing links or attachments.

“If you are unsure about a link’s legitimacy, avoid clicking on it and verify its source before proceeding,” Chaaba advised in a statement issued on Friday.

He also warned against joining WhatsApp groups without proper verification, noting that hackers often use fake groups or social engineering tactics to expose users to malicious content.

“Before joining any group, verify its legitimacy by contacting the organizer or confirming through trusted sources,” Chaaba said.

“Additionally, ensure your privacy settings are configured to limit the visibility of your personal information and only share contact details with trusted individuals.”

Chaaba encouraged users to report suspicious activity on their accounts, such as unauthorized messages or unexpected changes to account settings, to the authorities promptly.

“ZICTA remains committed to enhancing cybersecurity awareness and equipping consumers with the knowledge they need to protect their digital lives,” he added.

The Authority reaffirmed its dedication to monitoring cybersecurity threats and collaborating with stakeholders to ensure Zambians can safely use WhatsApp and other digital platforms.
