The TONSE Alliance has resolved to field candidates in the 2026 general elections through the New Congress Party (NCP), led by Pastor Peter Chanda.

This decision may include presenting former President Edgar Lungu, who leads one of the factions of the Patriotic Front (PF), as its presidential candidate.

Lungu is unlikely to contest on the PF platform due to ongoing internal divisions within the party.

Alliance Spokesperson, Sean Tembo, announced that the NCP will also serve as the platform for contesting upcoming by-elections in Kawambwa, Chililabombwe, and Shang’ombo, as well as all future elections.

The resolution was made during a Monday meeting chaired by former President Lungu, attended by TONSE Alliance leaders.

“The TONSE Alliance leaders will travel to Kawambwa to escort and show solidarity with the parliamentary candidate during the filing of nominations on Thursday, November 21, 2024,” Tembo stated.

Following the nominations, the Alliance planned to hold a press briefing in Kawambwa to unveil new members joining the coalition in Luapula Province.

Tembo added that the Alliance leadership would also visit Nickson Chilangwa, the Kawambwa MP currently held at Mukobeko Maximum Prison, to provide moral support and seek his blessings for the Alliance’s candidate in the by-election.

The TONSE Alliance, comprising seven opposition parties, has recently endorsed Edgar Lungu as its presidential candidate for the 2026 elections.

Accepting the nomination, Lungu vowed to restore democracy, constitutionalism, and the rule of law if re-elected.

Vice Chairperson Dr. Dan Pule hailed the coalition as “the game changer Zambians have been waiting for,” expressing confidence in its ability to secure victory in the coming elections.
