Mwansabombwe Member of Parliament, Kabaso Kampampi, has filed a lawsuit in the Lusaka High Court, seeking to reverse recent leadership changes within the Patriotic Front (PF).
Kampampi is calling for the reinstatement of former President Edgar Lungu as PF leader and the nullification of Mafinga MP Robert Chabinga’s appointment as acting president.
In his petition, Kampampi alleged that the October 24, 2023, PF convention, which resulted in Chabinga’s appointment as acting president and leader of the opposition, violated the party’s constitution.
He claimed the process was flawed and seeks a declaration that the convention and its outcomes were invalid.
The lawmaker further accused Chabinga of overstepping his authority by amending PF’s records at the Registrar of Societies and expelling party members, including Kampampi himself, on November 10, 2024.
He argued that these actions contravened a court order issued on November 9, 2024, which barred Chabinga from performing any functions as acting president.
Kampampi alleged that Chabinga continued to act as PF leader despite being prohibited by the court and claimed this had caused him significant losses and damages.
In a demand letter dated November 11, 2024, Kampampi urged Chabinga to reverse all decisions made in his capacity as acting president.
Kampampi is seeking a permanent injunction to prevent Chabinga from acting or presenting himself as PF president.
After former President Edgar Lungu stepped down as Patriotic Front (PF) leader, the party has faced significant internal divisions, with rival factions vying for control.

In a dramatic turn, the PF’s general conference resulted in the election of Matero MP Miles Sampa as the new party president.
However, the rival faction led by Given Lubinda swiftly rejected the decision, declaring it illegal.
This conflict prompted the return of former President Lungu to the political stage, as he sought to regain control of the party amid growing tensions.
The power struggle within the PF has intensified since its loss in the 2021 elections.
Both factions have been embroiled in legal battles over the legitimacy of various party appointments, including those to key positions such as Secretary General, and Information and Publicity.
