Zambia has urged member states of the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) to enhance regional partnerships and invest in advanced geospatial tools to drive sustainable development.
Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sylvia Masebo, made the call as she assumed the two-year Chairmanship of the RCMRD Governing Council, taking over from Uganda during the 58th Governing Council meeting held from November 11–19, 2024, at Ciela Resort in Chongwe.
“As member states deliberate, we must ensure that RCMRD continues to evolve, adapting to the rapidly changing technological and developmental needs of our time,” Masebo stated.
Outgoing Chairperson, Dorcas Okalany, represented by Richard Juuko, expressed confidence in Zambia’s leadership and extended goodwill to the new Chair.
RCMRD Director General, Emmanuel Nkurunziza, underscored Zambia’s active membership since 1980 and highlighted the organization’s upcoming 50th anniversary in April 2025.
“The RCMRD was established to ensure accurate understanding and management of resources, aiding national institutions in achieving their development objectives,” Dr. Nkurunziza noted.
The RCMRD, comprising 20 African member states, focuses on capacity building, resource mapping, and efficient resource utilization to support national and regional development goals.
The meeting set the stage for advancing geospatial technology and strengthening regional collaboration to address pressing development challenges, with a particular focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
