UNZA lecturers threaten strike, claim only K206 million of promised K1.4 billion funds released

University of Zambia (UNZA) lecturers are set to hold a strike callout next week as prolonged negotiations with the government over funding issues reach a standstill, according to UNZALARU President, Professor Andrew Phiri.

Speaking at a briefing in Lusaka, Phiri criticised the government for failing to meet its financial commitments to UNZA, noting that only K206 million out of a promised K1.4 billion had been released, severely impacting the university’s operations.

The funding gap, he warned, jeopardized essential services, academic programmes and campus support.

Phiri stated that while government interest in resolving the issue exists, “concrete measures” are urgently needed.

University of Zambia and Allied Workers Union (UNZAWU) Secretary General Moonga Mupuna voiced frustration over the decade-long, unresolved arrears, now at approximately K1.4 billion.

Similarly, UNZAPROSU President, Likezo Pumulo, stated that ongoing conciliation efforts had failed to yield a resolution, prompting the unions to escalate the matter with a strike action.
