Samuel Maimbo, the Zambian candidate for the presidency of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has stated the need to significantly reduce delays in the implementation of development projects.

Maimbo, endorsed by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as its sole nominee for the AfDB presidency, highlighted the importance of streamlining systems and processes to accelerate project rollouts.

“We must improve the systems and processes. The time it takes to get development projects on the ground needs to be shortened significantly,” Maimbo said in a statement on Tuesday.

He also pointed to the significance of fostering partnerships, especially with the private sector, to ensure effective project execution.

“The AfDB is not here to compete with anyone; it’s here to partner with everyone. Our competition should be against the challenges faced by the continent,” Maimbo added.

He further stressed the need for increased financing, utilising both domestic and international resources, to address Africa’s development challenges.

Maimbo expressed his intention to build on the successes of his predecessors, focusing on overcoming the “last mile problem” in development.

“If elected in 2025, my goal is to elevate the African Development Bank’s role in bringing sustainable development to the continent,” Maimbo stated.

He also praised the AfDB’s staff, expressing confidence that their expertise would help achieve the bank’s objectives.
